Johnny Depp starring animated Western bags $9.75 million; 'Beastly,' 'Take Me Home' disappoint.
By Shawn Adler
He's a chameleon able to blend in seamlessly against any background, but Rango's latest transformation might be his best yet: box office champ.
Led by Johnny Depp and an all-star cast of voice actors, "Rango" topped all comers at the Friday night box office with an estimated $9.75 million from 3,917 screens. Should form hold, the Gore Verbinski animated western about a chameleon who finds himself leading the small desert town of Dirt as sheriff will corral upwards of $40 million for the weekend and another number one opening from the team behind the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.
The secret to the film's success? There's a little Rango in all of us, Depp told MTV News.
"What I saw early on with the character, and something that Gore and I talked about, is that it is in sort of all of us, in a way," Depp explained. "There is a chameleonic side to all of us in which we find ourselves in certain situations that you have to adapt to."
Trailing in second place, "The Adjustment Bureau" managed to nab $6.6 from 2,840 theaters. Based on a story by acclaimed author Philip K. Dick, the Matt Damon and Emily Blunt actioner was no doubt buoyed by a largely positive response from critics.
But while "Rango" and "The Adjustment Bureau" soared, two new releases aimed at the young adult market languished. A modern day update of the classic fairy tale about the ultimate "opposites attract" couple, "Beastly" managed just $3.5 million to wind up in third place. The Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens starring flick should wind up with approximately $10 million for the weekend.
After languishing on the shelf for years, "Take Me Home," meanwhile, scored just $1.2 million on Friday. Starring Topher Grace and Anna Faris, the flick might slip out of the top ten come Monday.
Rounding out the top five, "Hall Pass" and "Just Go With It" managed $2.7 million and $1.9 million, respectively. Among other films in the top ten, "The King's Speech" followed up its four wins at the Academy Awards with a $1.6 million Friday.

DJ White Shadow talks to MTV News about the Born This Way track, which he dubs his 'favorite song.'

Earlier this week, fans got a taste of the new Born This Way track "Government Hooker," which made its debut during a Mugler fashion show in Paris. The song's producer, DJ White Shadow, called "Hooker" a thumping, sexy track.
"To me, that song is my favorite song, and it's just a beast," he told MTV News. "I don't even know how to explain it. [Born This Way] is not a pop album; it's a pop masterpiece of music. If there was no category of pop music, you wouldn't call it pop music."
Shadow recalled how the song came together — and let's just say what happens in Vegas doesn't always stay there. "We were in this studio in Vegas, and I was playing some hip-hop stuff [for Gaga's label boss Vince Herbert], and I ran across this [old beat I had made], and we were talking about faster songs, so I sped it up and I played it for Vince."
It seems the new version of the beat, which Shadow had worked on with DJ Snake ages before he played it in that Vegas studio, was the magic that Herbert was looking for. "He was like, 'Whoa.' She walked in, and I played it for her and [producer] Fernando [Garibay]. She laid it out in two seconds. She sang over the melody and tuned it up and put the chorus in. She finished it super quick."
There's a Euro-sounding robot on the track, which comes courtesy of someone in Gaga's inner circle. "The guy that's actually talking, that's her security guard," White Shadow revealed. "We were sitting there thinking how to make a computerized voice, so we were like, 'Let's get Pete in here.' He's got a super-thick Dutch accent, and he's trying to read off paper. It was insane, and he just talks like that. That's what it's like working with Gaga. It's like a f---ing supernova. When she walks into a room, things explode."
The lyrics, White Shadow said, were written right there on the spot. "She thinks of sh-- that I can't comprehend," he said. "It doesn't make sense to me, and I'm a creative person."
A credit to her charm and smarts, Shadow summed Gaga up like this: "Working with her is totally different than anyone else I've ever done anything with. She's the most hands-on person I've ever run into. She could walk into Steve Jobs' office and tell him he's doing Apple wrong, and he'd listen. As a producer, it's super cool to be with somebody who generally cares and is fully involved."

Actor's rep just confirmed the private ceremony on Friday.
By Aly Semigran
Get ready to hear a whole lot of "International Man of Mystery" jokes. Comedic actor Mike Myers of the "Austin Powers" and "Shrek" franchises married his longtime girlfriend Kelly Tisdale in a private ceremony ... five months ago.
A rep for Myers confirmed the news to the New York Post's Page Six that the 47-year-old "Saturday Night Live" alum wed Tisdale after roughly four years of dating. The rep told the newspaper that the under-the-radar ceremony for the secretive couple was "beautiful."
This marks the second marriage for Myers, who split from his wife of 12 years, writer/actress Robin Ruzan, in late 2005. Myers used Ruzan's mother Linda as the inspiration for his popular "SNL" skit "Coffee Talk" and credited Ruzan herself for encouraging him to make the "Austin Powers" films.
Tisdale and Myers began dating shortly after his split from Ruzan. Tisdale, who is said to be in her 30s, was previously romantically linked to musician Moby, with whom she founded the New York café Teany.
Myers, who hosted the MTV Movie Awards in 2008, was last seen (or heard, rather) on the big screen in 2010's "Shrek Forever After," but more recently stopped by "SNL" to help out his old friend, host Dana Carvey, with a "Wayne's World" sketch.
